Pirelli responded to criticism from Lewis Hamilton, who interrupted a live interview with Formula 1 boss Stefano Domenicali on Saturday evening and said they could have easily qualified with good rain tires.
Mario Isola, Pirelli: “We really need to improve the performance of the rain tires to achieve the optimal combination with the intermediate tires. That’s the goal. We have adjusted the rain tires slightly for next season. Unfortunately, we did not have the opportunity to properly test rain tires on a circuit that demands a lot from the tires, in order to achieve more.
We changed the tread pattern a bit, worked on the design and composition. We have made progress, but I cannot say whether this is enough or not.
I don’t know why the race director decided to postpone the session, whether it was due to visibility, standing water, the risk of aquaplaning or some other factor. I have no information about this.
If we only talk about the insufficient efficiency of rain tires, it only means that cars have to drive slower, nothing more. We realize that we need to improve the performance of rain tires, but this does not mean that our rain tires cannot be used.”
