Okon: we have high hopes for Miami

The Imola race was the first round of the new season in which Esteban Ocon and Alpine F1 failed to score points. But the French driver is quite optimistic and hopes that things will go better in Miami.

Esteban Ocon: “The race at Imola was not the best for me, as was the weekend as a whole, it was difficult. But if you consider that in the sprint I started from the last row, in the race from 16th position, and finished 11th (after which I was fined and dropped back to 14th place), it turns out that in two days before half the pack, and it’s not bad.

But this was not enough to earn points. So now we are going to prepare for the Miami Grand Prix and see what we can achieve there. On my car there will be some new elements affecting the speed, so we have high hopes for this race.

At Imola, the improved underbody was only installed on the car of my team-mate, Fernando Alonso, but the team was able to get enough information to make sure it worked. This was especially evident during the second practice, when we were working on dry surfaces. So now I hope to try.

As I will be staying in Imola to participate in the Pirelli tire tests, this is an additional opportunity for us to find out what went wrong over the race weekend.

If Fernando and I have the same cars, we show very good results, and in general we have an excellent relationship based on mutual respect. This also helps the team, because all discussions in the team are very open: if something goes wrong, we talk about it, if we need to help each other, we help.

At the same time, we fight with him on track, which is great because we know where the line is that cannot be crossed.

There are many interesting races ahead, and it’s not just the new Miami Grand Prix. For example, I’m looking forward to the rest of the European stages, including Monaco and the French Grand Prix, where my home race will take place. I participated twice, but without much success, so let’s see what we can achieve this year.

Now all races are equally important, because this year, thanks to the transition to the new regulations, there is the opportunity in every stage to show a good result.
