Of the record 24 stages on next season’s calendar, it may not be the racers’ favorite stage at Spa. 2009 World Champion Jenson Button thinks it’s wrong…
Jenson Button «If the circuit in the Spa is not on the calendar, I am very upset. With Monaco, the situation is complicated, there is a lot of discussion behind the scenes. But if Spa is removed it will be for other reasons, not because the track is bad. It’s one of the best tracks in the world, the races are always great and the drivers and teams love to compete.
You have to be careful when planning your agenda. We understand that Formula 1 is a show that has made a series very popular in the US. It’s great for sports. But we have to make sure that the races remain interesting, that we get to the tracks that make drivers happy. We’ll get a lot more from them if they don’t ask themselves, “How did we get here? You cannot overtake here, the track is too narrow.”
I like the combination of street circuits and old-school stationary tracks, but we can’t race in city centers around the world just for the sake of prestige. The inclusion of the track in the calendar should only depend on the track and the country it is in – this will increase the number of fans and see a fun race with intense battle and a lot of overtaking, which is very important.”
