Both Mercedes drivers finished in the top ten in Sao Paulo: George Russell took 4th place, Lewis Hamilton 10th. At the same time, George’s result is worse than his starting position, while Lewis’s is much better.
George Russell (4th): “The race was intense and now we have a lot to analyze and a lot of lessons to learn. I had a good start and the pace in the first part of the race surprised and encouraged me, as the set of tires I started the race on had the wrong air pressure, so we expected the tires to suffer a performance loss.
When it started to rain heavily and the virtual safety car was introduced, I wanted to stay on track because I thought the race would be stopped by red flags as aquaplaning started to occur on the straights.
But I pitted, as did Lando Norris, and we ended up finishing 4th and 6th as the cars left on the track finished ahead of us. But after the race it is much easier to talk about what decisions should have been made. We accept them together with the team and try to find the best option taking into account the information we have.
However, if they had told me at the start of the weekend that I would finish fourth, I would have agreed. However, after finishing second in qualifying and leading the first half of the race, it is difficult not to regret the missed opportunities.”
Lewis Hamilton (10th): “The race was very difficult – to be honest this is probably one of the most difficult weekends of the season. The car was difficult to drive all weekend and the situation did not improve as the race progressed.
But even with results like today, it’s wrong to leave Brazil in a bad mood because the fans here are incredibly passionate. In addition, the day turned out to be very unusual due to the early qualifying, but the public was already queuing on the circuit at four in the morning!
Today I experienced strong emotions when I drove a number of laps in Ayrton Senna’s car this morning in front of the full stands of the circuit. It was a very special moment and I am very grateful that we were able to organize this event despite the weather.”
