Tsunoda: The red flags came at a bad time

In Sao Paulo, Yuki Tsunoda showed his best qualifying result of his career: on the Brazilian circuit he started from 3rd position, but was unable to maintain it and eventually took 7th place in the race. His teammate, Liam Lawson, also earned points and finished 9th.

Yuki Tsunoda (7th): “This morning I showed my best qualifying result and was very happy to start from 3rd position. Overall, the team did a great job. We were able to achieve noticeable improvements thanks to the fact that we adjusted many car settings after the sprint. However, because weather conditions have changed, it is difficult to make accurate comparisons.

If we talk about the race: I had a good start and a good first stint. Overall I am happy with my driving style. Unfortunately, a number of circumstances worked against us.

The red flags during the race came at a bad time for us and the Alpine team earned a lot of points – it’s a shame that our position in the Constructors’ Championship deteriorated. Overall, we had mixed feelings today, although it is nice to earn points again. There are many positives at the end of the weekend and we will continue to attack in the remaining three stages of the season.”

Liam Lawson (9th): “It was a crazy race and took place in incredibly difficult conditions. I am very happy for the team, they have earned important points, which is very important for us. I believe depending on the positions we started from something was missed, but we were just a bit unlucky.

Our race took a bit of a turn when the McLaren car sent me into a spin, losing some time, but after that we kept fighting. And then we went to the pit stop and got tires for heavy rain, and that also cost us lost time.

We were able to get good speed, especially at the beginning of the segment, but towards the end we started to have problems.

Both Alpine drivers were on the podium today, a great result for them. At the same time, they were only five points ahead of us, which we can very well regain, so we plan to continue to earn points in the remaining three stages.”
