In the rain on Sunday morning, Valtteri Bottas qualified eleventh, but dropped back in the race due to multiple restarts. His teammate Guanyu Zhou qualified and finished last.
Valtteri Bottas (13th): “It was great to reach the second part of qualifying this morning. I believe the final would have been possible without the red flags.
In a race with changeable weather and many restarts, we did our best. Our biggest problem was the slow tire warm-up, which caused us to drop back on every restart. Once the tires reached the required temperature we increased the speed, but this was still not enough to beat our rivals.
Overall, we performed weaker than I expected, even though we gave everything. Now the team will work on preparing new products for the remaining races.”
Guanyu Zhou (15th): “Difficult weekend. After the schedule changed and it was announced that qualifying would take place on Sunday morning, all teams had to adapt.
The morning session went well, but conditions deteriorated at the wrong time. I had to start two fast laps in limited visibility, otherwise I would be able to compete well for a place in the second session.
The race proved difficult: after each safety car period, 10-15 laps were needed to get the tires in the right condition. The lack of grip and the difficult conditions made the race a real challenge. However, I am happy to complete the series of three stages in a row. We need to use the time before Vegas to figure out what we need to do to get back into contention.
