Alonso: I wanted to finish for the sake of the mechanics

Aston Martin drivers Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll crashed their car during morning qualifying for the Sao Paulo Grand Prix. The mechanics repaired the equipment, but at the start of the warm-up lap Lance suffered brake problems, causing him to fly off the track and get stuck in the gravel.

Alonso also had problems with the brakes, but Fernando managed to finish fourteenth.

Fernando Alonso (14th): “It’s a difficult race. The car turned out to be less competitive over the long distance than in qualifying. After the accident we replaced several parts, which made the car slower. In addition, there were problems with the brakes during the restart.

In the second half of the race the car suffered from swaying. In any other situation I would have finished the race, but the mechanics did a great job fixing the car after qualifying, so I wanted to get to the finish ahead of them.

The series we built proved difficult for us, and there is another such series on the horizon. We need to regroup and gain more speed.”

Lance walk (didn’t start): “It was very strange. It seemed like the brakes were failing because as soon as I pressed the brake pedal, the rear wheels locked and I became a passenger. I got stuck in the gravel and that was the end of my race.

It’s a shame because anything could have happened in the rainy race, but we weren’t able to take advantage of the opportunities.”
