Max Verstappen was furious that race management did not stop the second qualifying session for the Sao Paulo Grand Prix with red flags immediately after Lance Stroll’s departure, giving some drivers time to complete their attempts.
In the final minutes of the session, Lance Stroll crashed his car in the first sector and yellow flags appeared on the track. The riders who managed to complete the first sector before Stroll left were able to finish the lap and improve. But Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez were not among them. As the Red Bull Racing drivers prepared to complete their fastest laps, the yellow flags turned red and qualifying ended for Verstappen and Perez.
Commenting on the results of the session on Sky Sports, Max did not hide his irritation: “If a man flies into the wall, red flags should be shown immediately! I don’t understand why it took them 30, 40 seconds to decide to extinguish the red flags.
I don’t care if anyone was able to finish their rounds. It’s stupid to talk about it. This is just funny!’
In the qualifying protocol, Max Verstappen remained in twelfth place, but will lose another five places at the start due to engine replacement. His teammate Sergio Perez qualified thirteenth.
