Until Sunday’s race at Interlagos, things were not going well for Alpine this year. The team took penultimate place in the Constructors’ Championship, only ahead of Sauber. With a slow car it was difficult to count on more.
But rain and a successful strategy in Sao Paulo changed the situation overnight. Alpine achieved 35 points and thus climbed to sixth place, for which it will receive significant prize money at the end of the season. Team consultant Flavio Briatore made no secret of his joy about Sky Italia.
Flavio Briatore: “From ninth place to sixth place is not 30 million euros. That’s 29.2 million! That’s the first thing I asked.
Without taking anything away from Esteban Ocon, who was incredible in the rain, and Gasly, who did a great job, I have to say we were very lucky. It seems our car is more competitive on a wet track. Unfortunately, I don’t think the next three races will be held in the rain.
There has been a lot of talk about young drivers lately, the debutants really deserve a lot of praise, but at Interlagos we saw again how much in Formula 1 depends on the experience of the drivers.”
