In Brazil, Nico Hulkenberg became the first Formula 1 driver in more than seventeen years to be disqualified during a race for outside assistance. Commenting on the unusual punishment, Nico said the marshals were very pleased with themselves.
Nico Hulkenberg: “Everything went well, not terrible, but not great either, but my race ended immediately after the pit stop.
The marshals came out, pushed the car out and were very pleased with themselves. They were having fun and encouraging me by saying, “Come on, come on, the race isn’t over yet!” At that moment you don’t think, you don’t care, you just move on and suffer the consequences later.
The race took place under very difficult conditions: incredibly little grip on the asphalt and a very narrow operating range of the tires. In such conditions it is very difficult not to make mistakes.
We had a bad weekend for various reasons, we made a lot of wrong decisions, now we just have to recover.”
