After each stage in The Race, the riders’ performance was evaluated on a 10-point scale, with the overall rating calculated based on the results of the first part of the season…
Max Verstappen: 8.6 points
Max didn’t always get the result in qualifying, he made a few mistakes in races, but overall he spends the season almost perfectly. In racing the Red Bull car is more competitive than the Ferrari, Max takes advantage of those strengths, so his title this year, barring something unusual, is undeniable.
Charles Leclerc: 7.7 points
Charles Leclerc is astonishingly fast this year, taking pole position seven times and should have won more than three races. Unfortunately Ferrari let him down in Spain, Monaco, Azerbaijan, Canada and Silverstone, and he made a mistake in Imola and Paul Ricard.
Lando Norris: 7.6 points
Lando Norris is seventh in the individual standings, but third in the general classification. It’s all about the McLaren car – it’s not nearly competitive everywhere, but Lando almost always gets the most out of it.
Lewis Hamilton: 7.5 points
At the start of the season it was difficult to evaluate Lewis’s performance, given the extreme tuning experiments Mercedes were doing in an attempt to find a solution to the problems that arose. But when this stage was over, Lewis was steadily ahead of George Russell in speed. A string of podium finishes from Canada, including two consecutive second-place finishes in France and Hungary, held back those who suddenly thought Hamilton had given up.
Fernando Alonso: 7.4 points
Fernando is performing at a very high level, he is fast, stable and inferior to teammate Esteban Ocon in the individual standings, mainly because he lost from 30 to 50 points for reasons beyond his control.
George Russell: 7.3 points
Aside from Silverstone, where he caused a crash, Russell thrived under difficult conditions and consistently finished in the top five.
His pole position at the Hungaroring was Mercedes’ first real qualifying success behind the wheel, although Hamilton had a speed advantage in recent Grands Prix. Overall, he has proven to be one of the strongest Formula 1 drivers.
Valtteri Bottas: 6.9 points
Valtteri is a solid foothold for Alfa Romeo, showing a consistently high pace and making no mistakes behind the wheel of not the fastest car. If the car didn’t let him down, he was consistently earning points.
Carlos Sainz: 6.7 points
In the opening races, Carlos didn’t feel confident in the back of the car, but didn’t lower his head, although hopes for the title quickly collapsed. He worked seriously on himself and made steady progress. Sainz took first pole position in Formula 1, won the first race, but is still behind Leclerc in terms of speed.
Sergio Perez: 6.6 points
Sergio had a great first part of the season and in the second part he was a bit disappointed, which affected his position in the standings. He took pole position in Saudi Arabia and won in Monaco, which made life difficult for Verstappen at times, but then the car was modified and he was unable to match Max in terms of speed.
Esteban Ocon: 6.6 points
Esteban scored points in ten of the thirteen Grands Prix, but only a fuel pump failure at Silverstone and a penalty for a collision with Hamilton at Monaco prevented him from scoring points in 12 races. Contact with rivals – with Schumacher in Bahrain and with Tsunoda in France – has been one of Okon’s weaknesses this year. He has scored more points than Alonso and although his best performance falls short of the Spaniard’s, the Frenchman is having another very good season.
Racers of the second ten
Kevin Magnussen: 6.3 points
Pierre Gasly: 6.2 points
Alex Albon: 6.1 points
Sebastian Vettel: 6 points
Nico Hulkenberg: 5.8 points
Guanyu Zhou: 5.3 points
Lance Walk: 4.9 points
Daniel Riccardo: 4.8 points
Yuki Tsunoda: 4.7 points
Mick Schumacher: 4.6 points
Nicholas Latific: 2.9 points
