Former Formula 1 driver Jos Verstappen continues to attack anyone who criticizes his son. Last weekend both the British press in general and Johnny Herbert as FIA steward in particular took a toll because he allowed himself to say what he thinks. Herbert is forced to defend himself.
Johnny Herbert: “I have always said that during the race weekend I am a steward and a professional, and the rest of the time Johnny Herbert is an expert who speaks his mind. As a steward, I don’t give an opinion.
Each of us has our own opinion. Martin Brundle, Jos, me. Why can’t I express it when I’m off work at the track?
What happens on the tracks has been my world for the past 50 years. If I don’t completely agree with what I see, I say so. This does not only apply to Max. I will criticize anyone if I think this is justified.
I understand Yos’ position because he is his son. But there is and cannot be any bias on my part. I wasn’t the only one who thought Max had gone too far in Mexico. Lando Norris and Zach Brown felt the same way.
When I interact with people on Monday or Tuesday, it goes beyond my duties as a steward.
Jos has always been very open about what is going on at Red Bull. He has his own position, I have mine. If you have something to say, you can say it.”
