Former Haas boss Guenther Steiner believes Lando Norris has failed to take full advantage of the McLaren car this season. According to Steiner, Norris made too many mistakes that prevented him from becoming champion.
Guenther Steiner: “Remember the race in Austin, Max saw an opportunity and did what he did, and Lando got a penalty,” Guenther Steiner said on The Red Flags podcast. – In Mexico City, Max repeated the maneuver – he continually goes beyond what is allowed, but Lando does not do this. I think that’s the difference between them.
In theory, Lando should have won every race from pole position and if he had done so, he would have become champion. I always thought the car made up for some of its shortcomings. As we know, Max is the better driver, but McLaren has the best car at the moment and if Lando had just performed well, not fantastic, and not made any mistakes, he would have won the title. Now he won’t win anymore.
Max set the bar high in Sao Paulo. At the restart he overtook Esteban Ocon and easily moved forward. This is an indication of how he controlled the race. I think Max was happy that he could show how good he is, given all the criticism. In recent years he has won because he had the best car, but this time he did a great job.”
