At Interlagos, Oliver Berman replaced the ill Kevin Magnussen and on the fourth lap of the race he was given a 10-second penalty for an incident with another newcomer, Franco Colapinto of Williams. Oliver hit the rear of Colapinto’s car in Turn 9 and was spun while his opponent continued unchallenged.
The stewards believed he was fully responsible for the incident, but Berman questioned their decision.
Oliver Berman: “I only touched his car lightly, barely. Nothing happened to him, but I lost 10 seconds because of the turn and another 10 because of the penalty – the punishment turned out to be too cruel.
Initially the team planned that I would only give the first training, but real competition with opponents is much better than testing. I studied the course well, which I would hardly have been able to do without this race. The conditions were challenging, but I certainly learned a lot.
I didn’t have a very good race, I made a lot of mistakes, but I still finished. To be the best I have to stay on the track and earn points, but unfortunately mistakes have prevented me from doing so. The conditions were very difficult, but I was not good enough.”
