Young Andrea Kimi Antonelli will replace Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes next year, but not everyone is convinced he is ready to jump straight into a top team.
Eddie Jordan: “I think this move is a mistake because it will put incredible pressure on this young guy. Antonelli did not perform so well in Formula 2 this season to now switch to Formula 1.”
Juan Pablo Montoya: “Antonelli has the necessary qualities and speed, but I wonder: is he ready for Formula 1?
Of course, compared to other newcomers, with Berman, Duane or Bortoleto, he completed more laps, thanks to numerous Mercedes tests on different circuits. But at Monza in the first practice he looked as if he wanted to immediately break the lap record – and crashed the car.
Then in Mexico he drove too carefully in my opinion to be able to guarantee himself against mistakes, which in my opinion is also wrong. He has to find the optimal balance for himself, and until he doesn’t, I see this as a problem.”
