The other two places on the podium were sensationally occupied by representatives of the Alpin team – Esteban Ocon and Pierre Gasly. Neither had finished higher than ninth earlier in the 2024 season.
George Russell (Mercedes) and Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) finished among the top five. McLaren driver Lando Norris, Verstappen’s main pursuer in the championship race, only posted sixth place, despite starting from pole position.
Verstappen seriously increased his lead over Norris in the individual competition and, three stages before the end of the season, actually buried the championship intrigue.
The next Grand Prix will take place in Las Vegas at the end of November.
