In the spring, Carlos Sainz was mentioned as one of the candidates for a seat at Red Bull Racing, but Helmut Marko expressed his doubts whether the Spanish driver and Max Verstappen would work together, given their tense relationship at Toro Rosso in 2015. It is already known that Carlos will continue his career with Williams, but insists that Marco was wrong and that he would have worked with Max in the championship team.
Carlos Sainz: “I think Max and I would get along well. When Max and I performed together we were 16 and 19 years old, but we’ve matured a lot since then.
They give you a place at Toro Rosso and say: “Fight each other, whoever is better gets a place at Red Bull.” This was Toro Rosso’s raison d’être. We did not work with our partner for the sake of the team – otherwise the relationship would have been radically different. You could see what kind of relationship I had with my last two teammates: Charles Leclerc and Lando Norris. I’ve never had any problems with them.
If my relationship with Max was the reason why I wouldn’t go to Red Bull then I would say we wouldn’t have a problem. If the decision depended solely on this, this approach would be wrong, but I have already told them about it.”
