Jacques Villeneuve has joined the debate over whether Sergio Perez deserves a seat at Red Bull Racing. The 1997 world champion believes that the team has good reasons for this, as the team has not yet terminated the contract with the Mexican driver.
Jacques Villeneuve: “Franco Colapinto deserves a place in Formula 1, but such a place simply cannot be found. Everyone says he will take Perez’s place, but Perez continues to perform and he has a contract. People have been saying for ten months that the next race will be Perez’s last. Stop saying that! He has a contract.
Sergio gives the team sponsors and stability. Max Verstappen is very happy with him. And who knows how big the difference between them really is. Maybe Perez has slowed down a bit now, but maybe Verstappen is just great.
Red Bull can replace Perez with another driver, but what if he doesn’t perform better? What then? They know the situation much better within the team, and they have several riders from the youth academy. They don’t need this program to put Colapinto behind the wheel of a car for the main team, but to develop their own racers.”
