Mercedes team leader, co-owner and director Toto Wolff said in the High Performance podcast that he does not consider himself a leader…
Toto Wolff: “I don’t like the word ‘leader’ when it comes to myself. To me, a leader is someone who is above his people, and not on the same level as them. There are many leaders in our team, everyone tries to become the best in their role, to make the whole team better.
I try to make the maximum contribution as team leader, Lewis as driver, James Allison as leader of his engineers. We have many leaders. And only if we act correctly, each in our own place and share common goals, will we achieve success.
Every day I ask myself, “Am I living up to my expectations?” It all starts in the morning: did I make good use of the morning? I spend a lot of time reading the news in the morning. Have I read what I need to read to get myself in a good frame of mind for this morning’s reading, or have I read some nonsense?
This is literally how I analyze all my actions, always asking myself: am I doing the right thing?
