In 2014, Formula 1 introduced a system of penalty points that drivers receive for various violations. If you earn twelve points in a twelve-month period, you will be disqualified from one stage. This is why Kevin Magnussen missed September’s Grand Prix in Baku.
The Haas driver remains the only one to receive a disqualification for accumulating penalty points, but if you count the number of points collected since the introduction of this system, Max Verstappen becomes the record holder.
Throughout his Formula 1 career, Max earned 39 penalty points, but never exceeded the 12-point threshold in a calendar year. According to this indicator, Verstappen is only three points ahead of his Red Bull Racing teammate Sergio Perez, Kevin Magnussen and Lance Stroll.
By the way, about Stroll. The Canadian driver leads in another ranking – in terms of average number of penalty points per season – 4.5. In second place in this indicator is Daniil Kvyat – 4.33. Verstappen finishes the top three with a score of 3.9 penalties per season.
