Last Sunday, Jeremy Clarkson, a popular British TV presenter, in his column on the pages of the gossip magazine The Sun, compared two riders with ten championship titles between them. He then said that Max Verstappen “might be the best we’ve ever seen.” And he added: “…Lewis Hamilton’s time is over.”
Jacques Villeneuve, the 1997 world champion, disagrees with these assumptions; including the Canadian, commenting on Clarkson’s words, reiterated the widely held position that it is generally better not to compare different eras in Formula 1 history.
“How can Jeremy Clarkson say that Max Verstappen is the best driver of all time? “He had a great season when he beat Lewis and won his first championship,” Villeneuve told Grosvenor Sport. “And it was like Lewis won his first title.
Back then, winning championships came easy to him, but the same was the case with Lewis. And this year Max has to fight, stop the attack of his opponents, and now he is also performing well.
But the era in which Juan Manuel Fangio played cannot be compared to the modern era. These were different eras. Therefore, it is not worth saying about someone that he is the best racer of all time. The sport has changed too much.
At the same time, Verstappen certainly has the qualities that allow him to compare himself with Michael Schumacher in terms of the number of titles. Max still longs for success and is always focused on winning. He is not slowing down and if the situation allows, he will always be among the contenders for the title.
The same can be said about Fernando Alonso, he could also win seven championships. Remember how many times he came close to the title when he drove for Ferrari. But if you remember Schumacher, in his case there could have been only three titles, not seven, but it could have been more than seven.
There are several talented drivers who have not been able to win as many championships as they deserve. And Max has won all the championships he could have won so far without missing a single one.”
