This weekend the final of the Brazilian Porsche Cup takes place in Sao Paulo, and it is an endurance race and is called the “500 km of Interlagos”. This concerns Formula 1 veteran Rubens Barrichello, who, together with his partner Werner Neugebauer, claims the title in the Endurance category.
But both of Rubens’ sons, 23-year-old Eduardo and 19-year-old Fernando, also participate in this race, but they all compete for different teams.
“It’s so nice that my boys chose the same life! – Rubens commented. “I already wished them a nice weekend, because now we have to compete with each other.”
Barrichello turned 52 last May and he made his Formula 1 debut more than thirty years ago – in 1993, when he was twenty years old. Now he continues his career in the Brazilian national touring car series while admiring the sporting longevity of Fernando Alonso, who at the age of 43 is still competing in the world championship.
“A few years ago he called me and said, ‘I want you to be my partner in the virtual 24 Hours of Le Mans,’” Barrichello said on the Beyond the Grid podcast. – True, everything did not turn out as we expected, because we did not properly study the rules of these competitions.
But we asked the organizers to allow us to return to the race, and they agreed to meet us halfway even though we were already five laps behind. And yet we finished and were competitive. In general, I am ready if he turns to me again and asks me to become his partner at Aston Martin! (laughs)
How many years has Alonso been racing? His career is really impressive, because for example I spent 19 seasons in Formula 1. When you look Fernando in the eye, you can see that he still passionately loves what he does, and I really like that about him. I have used his example to teach my sons to overcome difficulties.”
