Formula 1 prides itself on the efficiency of its modern, fuel-efficient powertrains and aims to be carbon neutral by 2030.
Four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel thinks this is not enough. Monday evening at the World eX summit, he said Formula 1 should lead the way and invest some of the proceeds in Grand Prix promoters to find more sustainable solutions for racing and other mass events.
Sebastian Vettel: “I believe that any event with a large number of spectators must meet the requirements of our time.
Grand Prix is getting more and more fans. Our sport is attracting a new audience, especially in North America. More and more people have to get onto the highway in one way or another and then leave it, by public transport or something else. I think Formula 1 should share some of the proceeds with the promoters so that they can choose greener solutions to deal with more fans over the weekend.
It doesn’t matter if a large audience goes to a race, a rock concert or any other show, a big event always results in a large ecological footprint. And if we find a way to reduce it in the races, everyone will benefit.”
