Lawson: Candidates cannot be judged by their low grades

Next year, six talented young drivers will compete in Formula 1: Andrea Kimi Antonelli, Jack Duane, Oliver Berman, Liam Lawson, Franco Colapinto and Gabriel Bortoleto. They were all successful in the youth series, but Lawson believes that skills can only truly be assessed in Formula 1.

Liam Lawson: “In Formula 1 the cars are completely different. You may be fast in Formula 2 and in many other cars, but that speed does not automatically transfer to Formula 1 and vice versa. You may have a hard time in Formula 2, but your driving style suits Formula 1 or only requires a small adjustment.

No one knows what kind of driver will be in Formula 1 until he gets behind the wheel of this car. You can judge them by their results in the junior series, judge someone by their talent, but until you put them in Formula 1 you never know how fast they are, whether they can handle the pressure, etc.

That’s why it’s so important to be able to ride during training during the season. It seems the situation is changing, with regulations mandating more such training and teams giving a greater number of candidates the opportunity to test the car. And only if you get this opportunity can you show what you are capable of in Formula 1.”
