Mario Andretti, the 1978 world champion, has spoken out in defense of Max Verstappen and the Dutchman’s aggressive style on the track as he moves towards his fourth title.
When Andretti was asked if he considered showing such aggression a disadvantage, the legendary American driver replied: “I wouldn’t call it that under any circumstances. Let’s start with the fact that if you are not aggressive, you will not become a world champion, but because everyone makes mistakes, sometimes it is possible to overdo it.
Max knows this and it’s not that he intends to continue doing what he probably shouldn’t do, but he understands that on some tracks, for example in Austin, he wasn’t quite right with his actions, but that’s not bad.
From my point of view, this is real racing, and I love it when a driver acts so energetically on the track. It’s one thing to be aggressive and make downright stupid mistakes at the same time, but this is not the case at all.
Max is very calculating, but if the machine doesn’t allow him to do what he wants, he can get upset, which is also very natural, and then he might cross a certain line. However, this is no reason to talk about his shortcomings, and if I had my own team, and Max played for it, I would only praise him.”
Already in Las Vegas, Verstappen can become world champion for the fourth time, he only has to finish ahead of Lando Norris.
