On the eve of the weekend in Las Vegas, Max Verstappen tried the Acura ARX-06 sports prototype from the Grand Touring Prototype (GTP) class for the first time.
The test drive took place yesterday at the Las Vegas Speedway during the filming of a promotional video for Honda, which sells cars from two of its brands in the US market. More affordable models are sold under the Honda brand, while premium models are called Acura.
Last season the Acura ARX-06 was raced in IMSA, the American endurance racing series, by Wayne Taylor Racing with Andretti, and in 2025 two Meyer Shank Racing teams will field such cars.
One of them is Alex Palou, three-time IndyCar champion, and Max was driving his car. Verstappen was not there alone, but together with Visa RB drivers Liam Lawson and Yuki Tsunoda. But it was not Palou who helped them feel comfortable behind the wheel of the sports prototype, but his teammates – four-time winner of the 24 Hours of Daytona Scott Dixon and Colin Brown.
Judging by Max’s brief comments, which can be heard in this video, he enjoyed his first experience driving a GTP class car. The Acura ARX-06 sports prototype fully meets the requirements of the Hypercar class, and Verstappen dreams of one day participating in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, so he was naturally interested in getting acquainted with such equipment. However, Honda has no desire to participate in the French supermarathon yet – perhaps due to the fact that Acura cars are not officially sold in Europe.
