General Motors is close to its Formula 1 debut in 2026

We told you that a new team could appear in Formula 1 in 2026, based on the defunct Andretti Global project. The press managed to find out some details of this story.

Initially, Andretti planned to debut in Formula 1 in collaboration with General Motors, which would become a supplier of power units under the Cadillac brand. However, after the owners of Formula 1’s commercial rights refused Michael Andretti, General Motors is ready to field its own team.

According to informed sources, negotiations between Liberty Media and General Motors are at an advanced stage and if successful, the eleventh team will start in 2026.

Of course, in a year’s time General Motors will not have time to create a team from scratch, so they will take as a basis the Andretti Global project, which has already formed a full-fledged racing team at the Silverstone base and is a successful prototype of the 2026 car in the Toyota wind tunnel in Cologne.

General Motors plans to develop its own power plant, but it won’t be ready until 2028, so in 2026 the team will install customer power plants on the team’s cars. Renault spoke of its willingness to supply engines to the project when it was still led by Michael Andretti, but the company has now concluded the power unit development program.

It is very likely that the General Motors (Cadillac) team cars will have Ferrari or Honda engines in 2026. Mercedes already has many customers to supply engines to another team, but General Motors will not be able to supply Red Bull-Ford power plants to the car, as Red Bull-Ford was released from the obligation to supply engines to the customer in the first season to deliver. plowing.

An official statement from General Motors about the team is expected before the end of the month. Formula 1 has so far refrained from commenting.
