In the first practice, the asphalt on the city circuit in Vegas was dirty and slippery; a layer of used rubber appeared and the grip improved slightly, but many were dissatisfied. In the third session, the drivers complained again: the cars were skidding, the tires were working very slowly.
The third training session turned out to be the warmest of the weekend, although the mechanics were dressed in jackets in the pits. Williams recovered Albon’s car after yesterday’s breakdown – he was one of the first to leave, but many traditionally missed the first set of laps.
After the break, many immediately installed Soft tires, which they had not used the day before. Norris locked his tires while braking, went off track, but continued to drive. Verstappen missed turn five three times, complained that it was impossible to keep the car under control, drove into the pits and handed the car to the mechanics.
The mechanics held out and returned to the track. Max immediately led the protocol with 1:34.137, but almost immediately Sainz, Piastri, Norris and Russell drove even faster.
In the 44th minute the session was stopped with red flags. Stroll’s car froze on the straight between turns 12 and 13 due to the loss of power from the power plant and had to be evacuated.
The stopwatch continued to count down the time and the traffic light at the exit of the pit lane only turned green a minute before the end of the session. Everyone managed to leave, except Perez, who was a few seconds short. The mechanics had to push his car to the pits.
George Russell led the protocol and completed a lap in 1:33.570.
