Russell: Pole was a real surprise

George Russell won qualifying for the third time this season, in very difficult conditions on the city circuit in Las Vegas, where there is poor grip, high speeds and very close walls.

George Russel (1st): “To be honest, we weren’t thinking about pole at all before the start of the weekend, but it’s incredibly great that we were able to win qualifying again. We showed excellent speed all weekend and before the last attempt in the last session I understood that everything depended on this lap, and what happened before was no longer so important.

On my first lap there was a fairly sharp moment, after which I had to replace the front wing. At that moment I even thought we might not make it to the end of qualifying.

However, I had confidence in myself, in my abilities, and knew that if I managed to do a normal lap, I could get to the front row. But pole position is an incredible achievement, and now we have to analyze everything in detail and understand why we are going so fast this weekend. And although pole position was a real surprise, we must try to make the most of it and win tomorrow’s race.”
