In Las Vegas, Guanyu Zhou qualified higher than his teammate for the second time this season, achieving the thirteenth fastest time. Valtteri Bottas qualified nineteenth, but will start last due to a penalty for replacing the energy storage unit.
Guanyu Zhou (13th): “It’s great to be back in the second part of qualifying! We made good progress this weekend and I’m happy with today’s session. Given the limited time in the third training session, I am happy with my qualifying lap. This one was strong and I think I got the best out of the car.
Starting from such a position opens up opportunities for us, and the result was the result of the hard work of the entire team. Tomorrow we will do everything we can to take advantage of the starting position and fight for a good result.”
Valtteri Bottas (19th): “The session was chaotic for me. We knew the track would be fastest at the end of the first part, but on the last attempt I couldn’t set the first fastest lap. I knew I was going to do a second lap, but then I ended up in traffic.
I was a bit unlucky, but I didn’t complete the attempt properly. Too bad, but at least I got a penalty with the loss of five positions, so it was difficult to count on more than the last row.
There’s a mountain to climb tomorrow, and we’ll do our best. We have seen that there are opportunities to fight on this track and we will try to make the most of them.”
