Max Verstappen qualified fifth in Las Vegas and starts ahead of title rival Lando Norris. His teammate Sergio Perez stopped fighting in the first part of qualifying for the sixth time this season.
Max Verstappen (5th): “We did our best and worked well together. Together with the team we tried many different settings to understand which direction of movement was the right one. I think we made the right choice, but it was clearly still not enough to fight for pole. But I’m still happy.
I’m starting for McLaren and it’s unexpected, but I’m happy with how qualifying went and how I completed my laps.
At the moment it is difficult to say what awaits us in the race. We don’t look that good in the long series of laps and our tires wear out faster than other teams. However, many teams have already adjusted their settings, so only time will tell how we will perform.”
Sergio Perez (16th): “Of course I expected more today, but the progress I made at the end of the session was not enough to move forward. Disappointing result.
I’m optimistic about the race because yesterday the long distance pace looked more competitive. We’ll get answers tomorrow, but I’ll wait for the race.”
