At the entrance to the circuit in Zandvoort is a “National Motorsports Monument” with the names of Dutch drivers who have achieved success in international series.
Max Verstappen’s name appeared on it in 2016, then there were no updates for a long time and this week two were added to the list of 27 drivers at once – Nick de Vries, who drove in Formula E this year, and Renger van der Zande, who races in the US.
At the solemn ceremony, Nick was replaced by his father, Hendrik Jan de Vries, who commented on his son’s chances of getting into Formula 1.
Hendrik Jan de Vries: “I can’t say much, but he is in good company at Mercedes. To get into Formula 1, many factors have to come together that are beyond your control. You can see this in the case of Fernando Alonso, whose transition opened vacancies in multiple teams at once.
The appearance of Nick’s name on the monument is a sign of recognition of his achievements. It’s funny that Nick never raced here – after karting he moved to Formula Renault and left.
The initiative to realize the “National Motorsport Monument” in Zandvoort is from a group of drivers, managers and journalists.
The cause was the death of 24-year-old Marcel Albers at the stage of British Formula 3. The project was developed by American architect Carl Adrian Wolf and sculptor Juup Utens embodied it. To be among those whose name has been immortalized in the racing history of the Netherlands, you must meet strict requirements for achievements in a sports career.
