Carlos Sainz: Third place is our maximum for today

Before the start of the Las Vegas Grand Prix, Carlos Sainz expected to fight for victory, but in the race the car did not have enough speed and he finished third. This result, together with Charles Leclerc’s fourth place, allowed Ferrari to close the gap with McLaren in the battle for the Constructors’ Championship to 24 points.

Carlos Sainz (3rd): “The speed on the Medium tires was a shock to me. I expected to be fast on this set, but it only lasted eight laps. After that, the race came down to minimizing losses. Today I didn’t feel comfortable driving, and the car wasn’t particularly fast.

I would have liked to fight for the win with George, but we didn’t have the speed to do that. I was able to fight back and get back to third place. This is the best possible result for us today.”

Charles Leclerc (4th): “I was confident that our car was working well with the tyres, but I overdid it a bit in the first stint and paid the price for it. We were very fast in the second and third stints, but it was not enough.

I’m disappointed, but it has nothing to do with the team. In the first stint I overdid it and the Medium tires lost their efficiency. As a result, I had to let Carlos go first. We will discuss this point within the team, but I do not want to go into details publicly.

It is not about the team preferring one of the drivers. The question is what we agreed in advance. But it’s okay, I don’t want to go into details. I’m disappointed, but that’s my business.”
