Mercedes boss Toto Wolff summarized the results of the Las Vegas race, in which his team achieved a double victory, and assessed the prospects of George Russell and Lewis Hamilton at the Qatar Grand Prix.
Toto Wolff: “We are looking forward to the penultimate race of the season in Qatar, after our winning double in Las Vegas. The team did a great job over three days in the US. We were fast all weekend and did well on Saturday evening [по местному времени].
George started from pole and controlled the race. He drove brilliantly and had speed to spare. Lewis recovered after starting from tenth position to guarantee the team first and second places on the podium. A strong result was exactly what we needed at the end of the season and was the result of hard work and determination from everyone in the team.
It would be difficult to find stages more different than those in Las Vegas and Qatar. The Losail Circuit has many high-speed sections and few, if any, serious braking zones. Even though the race is later than last year, it will still be very warm. This contrasts with the cool weather and many slow parts of the circuit in Las Vegas.
In any case, we aim to perform strongly next weekend. The W15 is better suited for circuits with many fast corners, such as Silverstone and Spa. The cool weather in Las Vegas gave us an advantage, but the track configuration in Qatar should suit our car’s strengths.
We know the opponents will be stronger than last weekend, but we will try to get the car within reach and compete on the front row.”
