Paralyzed from the waist down after a crash at Pocono Raceway during a 2018 IndyCar race, Robert Wickens will compete in the 2025 IMSA SportsCar Championship series, competing only in sprint car races.
After suffering a spinal cord injury and a fractured thoracic spine, Wickens became an example of sportsmanship by returning to racing. He has been competing in manual transmission cars since 2022.
Last year he became champion of the American IMSA Michelin Piliot Challenge series in the TCR class with a Hyundai Elantra N TCR and recently tested in Formula E, where he drove a single-seater for the first time since the accident.
He will now drive the #36 Corvette Z06 GT3 for Team DXDT in the GTD class. Bosch created a special handbrake control system that would be installed on Wickens’ Corvette.
Robert Wickens: “This is what I have been striving for since the first day I was fired. I am happy to announce that I will be competing in the GTD class with DXDT Racing.
This wouldn’t have been possible without the support of the team, Bosch, GM and many others. And although I will not be performing on a full schedule for a while, this is a very big step for me towards returning to a top level.”
