Mercedes has confirmed that Mick Schumacher will end his association with the team as reserve driver after the end of the 2024 season. As is clear from today’s press release, this is the German driver’s choice.
From the beginning of 2023, he was a reserve at Mercedes for two seasons, regularly attended races, worked on the simulator and also took part in tests. But last season he combined these duties with performances for the Alpine factory team in the WEC.
Toto WolffCEO and Managing Director of the Mercedes-AMG F1 Team: “In his role as reserve driver, Mick is hardworking, diligent and driven and has made a very important contribution to the team over two years.
He worked on the simulator, tested different cars and was part of the racing team – we couldn’t ask for more from him. From day one he worked well with the team and was treated with incredible warmth by everyone at the Brackley and Brixworth bases.
But Mick is a racer first, and that is the most important thing for him. Both during his time in Formula 1 and this year in endurance racing, he has shown that he is an incredibly high-level professional. We see this and he deserves to participate in the best championships.
As he decides to take on this new challenge, I would like to personally thank Mick for his contribution to our team and we wish him all the best in all his future endeavours.”
Mick Schumacher: “I am grateful to Toto and the entire Mercedes team for the in-depth knowledge I have acquired in two years. This of course allowed me to become a more experienced racer as I learned to understand the technical side of things better.
But it’s hard for me to watch these cars race without being in the cockpit myself. I want to fully concentrate again on continuing my racing career. Ultimately, every racer wants to participate; it is racing where you can experience the emotions that you hold so dear.”
