Max Verstappen was not penalized in Austin when he forced Lando Norris off the track in a battle for position, and was given two 10-second penalties in Mexico City. In Qatar, GPDA chairman George Russell said the riders had reached a consensus – and are now waiting for changes to the regulations…
George Russell: “I don’t think it’s a difficult question. We all have a similar view of the situation. If you overtake inside, enter the corner and don’t fly out, it’s your turn.
Everyone wants to see a heavy wheel-to-wheel battle, with cars flying into the gravel and sparks flying. I think the stewards understand this. If you are on the outside and are overtaken, you have to give in.
Now the rules require the rider inside to leave room for the one outside, from the top to the exit. This rule is canceled. Hopefully this weekend.”
Many drivers believe that if you pass a car on the inside, you should be able to stay on the track. If you were able to hold on, then you have the right to force your opponent to drive wider, as has been common for all of us since the days of karting.
We also concluded that most of these problems are related to the routes. We discussed the problems in Austin and I think many maneuvers simply would not have been attempted if there had been gravel, like in Turn 4 in Austria. You jump on the gravel if you don’t hold the car, it’s enough to go one or two percent over the limit.
The tracks are the cause and the recommendations are a temporary solution that we have to make until all the tracks are in good condition.”
