The battle for first place in the constructors’ championship between McLaren and Ferrari has entered a decisive phase. Carlos Sainz fears that his Qatar team will have to think not about closing the gap with its rivals, but about how to prevent it from widening, as the Losail circuit is not suitable for the SF-24.
Carlos Sainz: “It is interesting how McLaren and Ferrari, two historic teams, have overcome the crisis and are now fighting for the constructors’ championship. I have great respect for McLaren because we started a project together that ultimately led them to leadership. I wish them all the best in this fight, but I am motivated to get ahead of them.
The circuit in Qatar is not the most suitable for our car, but at the same time Formula 1 always brings surprises. Theory is one thing, but the race can still go according to a positive scenario for us. Of course there are reasons for concern, but we must take advantage of all opportunities and be prepared to simply minimize losses.”
Commenting on the conflict with teammate Charles Leclerc, which arose because Carlos did not follow the team’s instructions during the race in Las Vegas, Sainz said the differences are a thing of the past.
“Charles and I talked about what happened in Las Vegas and came to mutual conclusions,” Carlos said. “We are certainly ready to move forward.” It wasn’t the best race for either of us, but now all our thoughts are on the battle for the Constructors’ Championship, which we will try to win by working together, as we have been doing for four years.”
