Visa RB is just four points behind Haas F1, who are sixth in the Constructors’ Championship, and just three points behind Alpine, who are currently in seventh place. But Laurent Mekis, the team leader from Faenza, understands that it will only be possible to stay ahead of the competition if the VCARB-01 machine works as efficiently as possible in the last two stages of the season.
Laurent Mekies: “We will try to fully concentrate on solving our own problems, and those consist of finding the optimal car settings and giving our drivers what they need to achieve good results. We know they can do this, and if we manage to achieve this in the usual way, this will allow us to reach the level we need to reach.
We must work clearly and confidently on the two remaining stages of the season – no worse than in Las Vegas and Brazil. Everything will probably only be decided in the last race in Abu Dhabi. I think it is great for our sport if there is an exciting battle both in the leading group and in the middle of the peloton.
In addition, factory teams participate in this battle. But even the teams that were previously considered small have now grown into serious organizations. It’s a really big fight and I think the fans like it. That’s why we love Formula 1.”
In Las Vegas, the team from Faenza presented the latest technical innovations, but Mekis admitted that it was not possible to make them work optimally right away: “To be honest, we didn’t start last weekend optimally, which made life difficult for ourselves. After the first training we found ourselves in the last two lines of the protocol.
But the team did an excellent job, analyzing everything, finding out what caused the problems and setting up the car correctly despite the difficult weather conditions. In the end we finished seventh in qualifying, which is an excellent result, and achieved ninth place in the race.
For large parts of the race, Yuki was seventh and then eighth. In general, it’s never fun when you lose positions with three or four laps to go. But that’s how it happened.
What allowed us to show good results is that we can now fight quite effectively in all conditions: this was the case in Brazil and Las Vegas. We are now three or four points behind Alpine and Haas, and there are also very interesting battles ahead of us in Qatar and Abu Dhabi.”
