Williams driver Alex Albon was close to reaching the final qualifying for the sprint of the Qatar Grand Prix – missing by less than two tenths. His teammate Franco Colapinto has shown recently and sees the upcoming sprint as a preparation for the main qualifying.
Alex Albon (12th): “First of all it was fun today – the track is interesting and very fast. I’m a little disappointed with the result. In practice it was not possible to bring the tires within operating range, and the problem was repeated in qualifying for the sprint. I think getting the tires in the optimal range was a problem for most teams.
I think everything will go well tomorrow. We have a very good pace over a long series of laps, so I am optimistic.”
Franco Colapinto (20th): “It was a difficult day – problems with the car started during practice. We couldn’t find the right direction to work with the settings. I lost time little by little throughout the lap and that’s the most frustrating thing because there wasn’t one specific spot where a big loss happened.
In fast corners the car drove well, but in medium-fast and slow corners there were problems with the front tires and balance. We tried to solve this by changing the settings after training, but the solution did not work as we wanted.
However, with the information we have collected today and that we will collect in the sprint, I hope that we can show something interesting in the main qualifying.”
