Mercedes chief race engineer Andrew Shovlin said the team’s main goal is to play a few more tenths to put a fight on the leaders in the second part of the season…
Andrew Shovlin: “Could we have won the race in Hungary? As after any Grand Prix, we will analyze everything carefully, taking into account all the details. You can often learn a lot from this. But I think when Verstappen took the lead, he felt quite comfortable.
To fight for wins, we need to play two or three tenths of the circle – and now we’re fully focused on this. When we achieve this goal, we can impose a fight on the leaders and this pressure can give us opportunities to compete for victory.
If we took the podium at the beginning of the year, it was only because one or two other cars made a mistake or because they had reliability issues.
We know what we want to achieve with this car. We want to make the fastest, we want to earn poles and win thanks to our speed, and step by step we are moving towards this goal.
The start of the season was difficult, but the team worked hard and gathered to get everything back on track. It was an interesting challenge that will make the team stronger.”
