Sergio Perez and Franco Colapinto started from the pit lane in the sprint of the Qatar Grand Prix, with the Red Bull Racing driver ahead of the Argentinian. When the traffic light at the exit turned green, Sergio hesitated, as it seemed from the outside, and Colapinto drove around him on the right.
Commenting on that episode, Perez explained that he had created a reserve of the vehicles in front because he did not want to drive in traffic, but on an empty track, so that the engineers could collect as much information as possible about the behavior of the car and tires and use this information during the race.
“I actually wanted to create a big base,” Racingnews365 quotes Sergio Perez. – One of the reasons we decided to start from the pit lane was not to gain back positions. We knew we were losing a lot, so we wanted to create as much groundwork as possible for the cars in front of us, so we couldn’t drive in traffic, but on an empty highway.
Colapinto was able to pass me, that was important. We tried a lot, but initially we wanted to create a base so that most of the sprint would take place on an empty track.”
