Andrea Stella about the position change in the last lap

Many were surprised when 100 meters before the finish, the sprint leader, Lando Norris, suddenly let Oscar Piastri pass, allowing his partner to win. On Sky Sport F1, team boss Andrea Stella explained these actions…

Andrea Stella: “Lando really wanted to repay Oscar’s debt for winning in Brazil. We tried to relieve Lando by saying on the radio that we were happy with our positions, but he found an opportunity to let his partner pass. Once again we saw an example of the unity and cohesion of our drivers, this is McLaren’s strength in our quest for the championship.

I would like to compliment the team and the drivers in general for a great job, which is very competitive in Losail after a difficult weekend in Las Vegas. The sprint turned out to be interesting. Ferrari had a new set of tires, Russell completed only one lap and Oscar and Lando two each.

On this track the new tires lose grip quickly and we have a small tire shortage that needs to be kept under control. At the same time, our rear wing configuration is more efficient in cornering, but slightly less in straight-line speed.

The race required a bit of cooperation between our two drivers, with Lando using DRS to help Oscar avoid being overtaken by Russell. He did brilliantly.”
