Alex Albon finished last in Qatar and received two penalties for a collision with Kevin Magnussen. For his Williams teammate Franco Colapinto, the race ended after the start in the first corner due to the fact that Esteban Ocon collided with him.
Alex Albon (15th): “Difficult day. I was alone at the back of the pack for most of the race because the car had no speed. The safety car made the race more interesting and we took the opportunity to switch to soft tyres. An optimistic gamble, but given our pace it was worth it.
We knew I could only overtake on the restart, and I even gained a few positions and was in the top ten for a while, but we waited for a new safety car, which never materialized, and the tires started to deteriorate quickly. I had a good pace for ten laps, but in the end we were not fast enough.”
Franco Colapinto (departure): “I’m disappointed that I was eliminated in the first corner, even though I left a lot of space on the inside. I was in the wrong place at the wrong time and there was nothing I could do to avoid a collision.
That’s quite a shame, because there were many opportunities to participate in the race. Unfortunately, such incidents are also part of racing. We still have to assess the damage received.
It is important to have a clean weekend in Abu Dhabi and try to end the season with a strong result.”
