Nicholas Latifi, the son of an Iranian-Canadian businessman, director of Sofina Foods, plays for Williams for the third year and, with rare exceptions, closes protocol, but brings a good budget to the team.
When Sky Sport F1 columnist Ted Kravitz spread rumors in Imola that one of the Williams drivers could be replaced next year by Oscar Piastri, who would be loaned to Alpine, there was immediate talk that Latifi was a clear replacement candidate, but at Williams once again publicly expressed their support for their racer.
Jost Capito, team principal: “There are always a lot of rumors during the transition season. I have no doubt Nicholas is able to go as fast as Alex, to show the same lap time if everything goes well.
This year the cars are much harder to drive than last year. He needs time to figure everything out, but the team fully supports him. We are confident that he will achieve the desired result.
Incidents do not increase trust, but we do try to increase it. The team works with him and sees progress. I think Nicholas is on the right track.”
