Fernando Alonso: We have benefited from retirements and fines

Fernando Alonso finished seventh in Qatar, ending a run of four Grand Prix victories.

His partner Lance Stroll collided with Alex Albon at the start of the race, damaging his car and retiring from the race. The stage in Qatar was the tenth in a row in which the Canadian Aston Martin driver did not earn any points.

Fernando Alonso (7th): “Very good Sunday – I finished seventh and earned six points. The car was better than on Saturday and we took advantage of what was happening on the track in front of us: retirements and penalties. But I myself was in the right place at the right time.

“We got the points at a very good time and I hope we get them in Abu Dhabi and end the season on a high.”

Lance walk (departure): “From the start the car didn’t feel as it should. In Turn 2 I locked the front wheels, which was strange because you don’t really have to brake much in this corner.

Then I made unintentional contact with Alex Albon’s car in Turn 5. I tried not to fight it and just tried to stay on the line in the corner, but I had a lot of understeer. Maybe the tires weren’t working as well as they should because I couldn’t do anything about it.

It’s a shame we had to drop out, but we’ll try again next weekend in Abu Dhabi.”
