In Germany, charges have been brought against men who extorted 15 million euros from Michael Schumacher’s family

The public prosecutor’s office in the city of Wuppertal (Germany) has charged three men in a case of blackmail against the family of the seven-time Formula 1 champion. Michael Schumacher Bild reports citing prosecutor Wolf-Tilman Baumert.

The blackmailers threatened to publish 1,500 files linked to Schumacher’s current fortune if they did not receive 15 million euros.

According to the prosecution, a man who previously worked in the security services of the Schumacher family sold and transferred confidential data about his former employer to two other criminals between October 2022 and May 2024. One of the buyers of the files contacted early June Schumacher’s office in Switzerland. The man claimed to have photographs, videos, medication lists and medical records of Schumacher.

To verify the authenticity of the data, he was asked to send files via email. The buyer asked his son to create an anonymous email account to send the requested documents. Later, the father and son were taken into custody.

According to the prosecution, the blackmailer could be sentenced, with aggravating circumstances, to a sentence of up to 15 years in prison for attempted extortion. His son is accused of complicity, and a former security guard for the Schumacher family is accused of complicity in attempted blackmail.

In 2013, Schumacher suffered serious head injuries in a skiing accident. In 2021, a documentary was released in which the runner’s wife and son confirmed that he was unable to move independently and communicate with others.
