Former Mercedes aerodynamicist Philipp Brendle said on ServusTV that his former team will be able to solve the problems that have arisen…
Philipp Brendle: “Last year Mercedes won the constructors’ championship, under the current regulations they get the shortest time in the wind tunnel of all the teams, so it won’t be easy to earn back. This factor will play a role.
Given Mercedes’ difficulties in the early races, there cannot be one obvious answer. Part of the problem has to do with aerodynamics, but it’s not all that. Another problem is the high weight of the machine. Every extra gram is stress on the tyres, in every corner, in every acceleration phase, in every braking phase.
Due to the straight-line construction, the car has to be adjusted so that it falls outside its working range – this allows you to make it at least semi-ready to drive. But it is simply impossible to fight for leadership with such institutions.
I have no doubt that the team will be able to handle it. These guys know what to do in difficult situations. That’s how it was when I worked at Mercedes. We sat down at the table and analyzed everything. But in Formula 1, things change quickly. At some point, even in England, you can lose your temper.”
