Michael Masi, the former FIA Race Director, will return to V8 Supercars, albeit in a slightly different capacity: before moving to Formula 1, he was the Australian Championship race director and now plans to join to the Supercars Series Commission.
According to media reports belonging to the holding company News Corp, Masi will replace Neil Crompton, who has headed the governing body of the popular Australian Championship for a decade but is preparing to retire. While the series organizers assure that the final decision has not yet been made, it is quite logical to assume that Masi will continue to work in V8 Supercars.
However, for this it is necessary that all 11 teams of the championship support his candidacy.
Masi had to say goodbye to Formula 1 after his controversial actions during last season’s closing race in Abu Dhabi, which made Max Verstappen world champion. Many found this unfair, and not only very harsh criticism, but even threats against the Australian.
After an investigation organized by the FIA, it was necessary to admit that while Michael Masi acted in good faith at the time, “mistakes were made by a human factor” during the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. This season, Eduard Freitas and Niels Wittich alternate as Race Director.
