Alpine invites young riders to participate in the WEC

In the future, students of the Alpine Youth Academy will have the opportunity to gain experience in endurance racing while there are no vacancies in the Formula 1 team.

The sports department of the French concern Renault is actively participating in the WEC and in 2024 this program should reach a new level, as Alpine develops the latest hypercar of the LMDh class together with Oreca, which should replace the A480 car with a 4.5 -litre naturally aspirated Gibson V8 engine.

“There are many opportunities for young riders waiting for a job,” said Alpine CEO Laurent Rossi. “Of course it is an option to be a reserve pilot and soon we will also have places in the LMDh program.

It seems to us that this allows us to organize the work with young people a little better than in the recent past when we had a lot of good talented racers, but there weren’t enough places for everyone. Now we’re trying to fix it.”

There is a direct reason for Alpine to streamline its work with young drivers, as their Formula 1 team was already in a rather unpleasant and ridiculous situation when they announced that Oscar Piastri would replace Fernando Alonso, who decided to join Aston. Martin to move. but the Australian refused to continue working with her next season.

This year it is he who is fulfilling the duties of reserve driver, but it soon became clear that he had already signed a contract with McLaren and how the situation would be resolved is still unclear. It appears that all sides to the conflict have taken a break, although the Alpine F1 head has already said they are likely to charge Piastri.

Rossi also made it clear that Alonso was being offered a factory LMDh program due to his extensive experience in endurance racing, but the Spaniard warned in advance that he had other plans.

When asked about a possible return to the WEC, Fernando replied: “Not in the near future. I think I am full of energy and tuned in to Formula 1. It will be very interesting for me to see how everything unfolds next. year, in the second season since the start of the new technical regulations, the Las Vegas Grand Prix will appear in the championship, maybe we will race in South Africa – all this looks quite attractive.

I’m not thinking about sports car racing or IndyCar at all, at least not right now. I am fully focused on Formula 1.”
